Armstrong wants better insurance for city workers

Mayoral candidate Dr. Ray Armstrong said if he's elected, he would look at the best opportunities for the people of Monroe, specifically, competitive prices and better deductibles in health insurance plans for city of Monroe employees.

Armstrong was responding to comments by city workers union President Robert Johnson, who on Monday said some city employees are tired of paying so much for health insurance. Union AFSCME Local 2388, which represents the city, endorsed mayoral candidate Johnny Riley on Monday.

Armstrong said it's clear they've lost faith in the current leadership.

"The insurance plan that Mayo offers does not promote wellness because high co-pays and deductibles keep people from getting testing and treatment when they need it," Armstrong said of incumbent Mayor Jamie Mayo.

Armstrong said if he's elected, he'd look into ways to prevent employees from having to seek costly treatment. Instead, he will promote wellness, as less money gets spent for keeping patients well than for treating them for their illnesses, he said.

As a medical doctor, Armstrong said he has had years of experience in both the practice and business of medicine.
